Auckland, New Zealand – Groupama sailing team survived a late scare to secure a dramatic victory on Leg 4 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 on Saturday, crossing the finish line shortly before midnight in Auckland to end Team Telefónica's winning streak and give New Zealander Brad Marsh a homecoming of a lifetime. HARD MILES TO THE FINISH
Conditions overnight for the fleet have been some of the worse experienced so far in the 11th Volvo Ocean Race, with six-metre swells and 25 knots of wind on the nose. GROUPAMA IN ADRENALINE RUSH TO CAPE REINGA
SLICK FRENCH TRANSITION SECURES SOLID LEAD ON APPROACH TO NEW ZEALAND
Overnight, runaway leaders in Leg 4 of the Volvo Ocean Race Groupama sailing team (Franck Cammas/FRA) began their long beat up towards Cape Reinga on the northern tip of New Zealand’s North Island. THE RACE TO THE TRADE WINDS
There was short-lived euphoria last night when, for the first time in weeks, some fast downwind sailing was enjoyed and the six Volvo Open 70s were able to show what they are made of shortly after rounding the southern tip of Taiwan. As the fleet shot north in the fresh breeze, the order changed constantly as the fleet headed away from the waypoint used to calculate distance to the finish in Auckland. »
