TELEFÓNICA LEADS IN FINAL SHOWDOWN
Die letzten zweihundert Meilen der Leg 3
At 1000 UTC today, Telefónica (Iker Martínez/ESP) led Groupama 4 (Franck Cammas/FRA) by 27 nautical miles (nm) in the final showdown of Leg 3 to Sanya. Both boats tacked shortly before 0900 UTC and are still upwind but on the layline for the finish, 274 nm ahead. Soon, as the wind shifts to the right, they will have fast reaching conditions ideally suited to both boats. »

TORTUOUS TACKING TOWARDS FINISH
Abscheuliche Bedingungen
Telefónica (Iker Martínez/ESP) continues to control the fleet as the leading four tack every hour around two miles off the coast of Vietnam in hideous conditions. They are not free of danger. Gales are still forecast for the track ahead and the fight between Telefónica and Groupama 4 (Franck Cammas/FRA) who has closed to 7.3 nm is set continue until the finish in Sanya. PUMA’S RISKY MOVE SPLITS VOLVO FLEET
Puma hat das riskante Spiel verloren
Last night, as Iker Martínez/ESP and Telefónica continued in the lead, Ken Read took PUMA's Mar Mostro across to the easterly side of the racetrack in a move that has split the team from the rest of the fleet. Letzte Nacht als Telefonica mit Iker Martinez weiter die Führung verteidigte, riskierte die PUMA einen Angriff weiter östlich, der dann aber komplett in die Hosen ging. PUMA ist weit zurückgefallen. WEATHER CLOSES IN AS LEADERS FIGHT FOR SUPREMACY
At 0200 UTC this morning, Groupama 4 (Franck Cammas/FRA) and PUMA’s Mar Mostro had peeled off from the wake of leg leader Telefónica (Iker Martínez/ESP) and tacked onto starboard. The first five boats are racing towards an archipelago situated 130 nm off the east coast of Malaysia, which they must leave to port. Martínez and his men changed direction one hour later and by doing so, adopted a protective position between Groupama 4 and the wind. VOLVO OCEAN RACE FLEET ENCOUNTERS MULTITUDE OF DANGERS IN THE MALACCA STRAIT
Strait of Malacca – One week after the restart of Leg 3 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12 in Male, Maldives, the race’s six-boat fleet has made its way south through the Malacca Strait, while confronting a multitude of natural and man-made dangers along this particular stretch of waterway. TELEFÓNICA PREYS ON CAMPER IN RACE TO MALACCA STRAIT
Telefonica bläst zum Angriff!
In contrast to the port tack beat for the first four days of this leg, the last 24 hours have been nothing short of dramatic. This afternoon at 1600 UTC, Team Telefónica with Iker Martínez was screaming through the fleet, sailing up to two knots faster than the rest and picking off places without remorse. Her final victim was Chris Nicholson’s CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand who, tonight at 1900, also fell prey to Telefónica who are now back at the top of the leg leaderboard as well as leading the race overall. TRIMMING, STACKING AND STUDYING
At 1000 UTC today, PUMA’S Mar Mostro (Ken Read/USA) continued her spell at the top of the leg leaderboard from the hard-pushing team on CAMPER (Chris Nicholson/AUS) who are three nautical miles (nm) behind, to lead the six-boat Volvo Ocean Race fleet towards Pulau We, the waypoint that marks the entrance to the Malacca Strait. POINTING AT THE TARGET
It’s neck and neck for the leading pair racing in Stage 2 of Volvo Ocean Race Leg 3 to Sanya. PUMA’s Mar Mostro with Ken Read (USA) has CAMPER (Chris Nicholson/NZL), nipping at her heels like a tiresome terrier, 3.4 nautical miles (nm) astern and to windward. Nicholson is fully fired up to snatch whatever opportunities he can to take the red boat into the lead. Nip and tuck, a game of chess, it’s as close as it can be for these two teams. BOAT SPEED IS KEY IN FIGHT TOWARDS MALACCA STRAIT
It’s been upwind all the way since the start of Leg 3, Stage 2 from the Maldives on Sunday, although this is set to change in a day or two once the tightly-packed fleet is free of the wind shadow caused by Sri Lanka, 200 nm to their north. Rome Kirby and Casey Smith keep their eyes peeled on the horizon for wind and wave information of value to Jono Swain, driving behind them.
