MALTA’S ON THE MAP

Competitors in the 2011 Rolex Middle Sea Race gathered in the Malta’s capital city of Valletta at midday today (Saturday) for the official prize giving. In keeping with this island’s rich and fascinating history, the prize giving was held in the Mediterranean Conference Centre, located in the “Sacra Infermeria”, a former hospital dating from late 1500s.ARTIE'S Crew at the Prizegiving of the Rolex Middle Sea Race 2011 ARTIE'S Crew at the Prizegiving of the Rolex Middle Sea Race 2011 MLT 2222, ARTIE, Owner: Lee Satariano, Type: J/122, LOA (m): 12.19 .Photo By: Rolex / Kurt Arrigo  »

BREEZE ON

1800 CEST - By Monday afternoon, the Rolex Middle Sea Race fleet was experiencing two completely different weather scenarios. The frontrunners of the fleet that had earlier rounded the western tip of Sicily were revelling in a 20 plus knot southeasterly breeze, while, for most of the day anyway, the bulk of the fleet sailed slowly in the lee along the north coast of Sicily in five to ten knots of wind.- DRALION, MLT MLT 5301 , DRALION, Owner: Pit Finis, Type: KER 53, LOA (m): 16.Photo By: Rolex / Kurt Arrigo.  »

BREAK ON THROUGH TO THE OTHER SIDE

1000 CEST - Overnight, the 2011 Rolex Middle Sea Race fleet parked up off the coast of Sicily near Catania – in the shadows of Mount Etna. So far, Esimit Europa 2 (SLO) and Rán (GBR) were the lone boats to have slipped through the Messina Strait, Esimit around 0330 Sunday morning, followed by Rán at 0830. Esimit, which rounded Stromboli four hours later, has since slowed down, and leads Rán by about 50 miles.
