Zürich, 29.1.12 Red. (mk) Team Telefónica continue to lead the in the Malacca Strait, with Groupama sailing team and PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG making small gains in second and third place respectively.

At 1900 UTC just 2.8 nautical miles separated the leading three, who have stretched their lead over CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing from 20 nm at 1400 to 30 nm.

Azzam’s Media Crew Member Nick Dana said despite the failure of the best laid plans to ride the a sea breeze close to the Malaysian coast the team had found motivation in CAMPER.

“There is no better motivation than another team right next to you sailing inch for inch," he said. “We knew that the others in fleet had made big gains, but we would hopefully carry the breeze longer into the afternoon and evening to make back some miles on the leaders.

“No doubt we will see more compression through the night at we edge closer to the Straits of Singapore.”

Meanwhile, Team Sanya are continuing to charge homeward in sixth place.
