Telefonica gewinnt auch die zweite Etappe

Das spanische Team der Telefonica mit Iker Martinez und Xabier Fernandez der Doppel-Olympiasieger gewinnen auch die Leg 2. Nachdem gestern Nachmittag alle Teams den geheimen Zielhafen aufgeschlüsselt bekamen, begann ein packender Finish, der schlussendlich die Spanier abermals als Sieger über die Linie segeln liess. Groupama 4 musste dem besonderen Mut zollen und wurde enttäuschter Dritter. Sie waren das Boot der Stunde, konnten sich aber im Finish gegen Telefonica und Camper nicht durchsetzen. Zürich, 27.12.11 Red. (mk) In den letzten 24 Stunden kam es zu einem intensiven Match Race zwischen Iker Martínez Telefónica, Gewinner des Leg 1 von Alicante nach Kapstadt, sowie der Cape Town In-Port Race, und CAMPER unter der Leitung von Skipper Chris Nicholson.

Die Einsätze waren hoch, als die beiden Teams auf den geheimen Zufluchtsort zusegelten. Nicholson Team wahr näher am Zielort als die Spanier. Und so entwickelte sich ein Duell der Superlative, das am Ende Telefonica als glückliche Sieger sah.

Telefonica überquerte die Ziellinie UTC 17.57:20 nur 1 Minute und 57 Sekunden vor CAMPER. Die Fahrt dauerte genau 15 Tage.

Telefónica bekam 24 Punkte für den ersten Platz. Dies sind 80% der möglichen Punkte die auf der Leg 2 vergeben werden. Der Schlusssprint wird für alle Teams nochmals 20% der Punktezahl geben. CAMPER als Zweiter erhielt 20 Punkte.

In der vorläufigen Rangliste liegt Telefónica top mit 61 Punkten auf dem ersten Platz, gefolgt von CAMPER mit 54 Punkten.

Die Ziellinie ist an einem geheimen Ort um die Boote vor Piratenübergriffen zu schützen. Nun werden die Schiffe auf ein Handelsschiff verladen und zu einem Punkt vor der Shajah Küste im Norden der vereinigten Emirate gebracht, wo sie dann das Sprintrennen nach Abu Dhabi absolvieren.

TELEFÓNICA TAKE NARROW VICTORY IN LEG 2, STAGE 1

Alicante, Spain – Team Telefónica will charge into 2012 as leaders of the Volvo Ocean Race after snatching victory over CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand in a thrilling finish to the first stage of Leg 2 from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi.

The final 24 hours came down to an intense match race between Iker Martínez’s Telefónica, winners of Leg 1 from Alicante to Cape Town, as well as the Cape Town In-Port Race, and CAMPER led by skipper Chris Nicholson.

The stakes were high as the two teams headed towards the secret safe haven, with CAMPER needing to finish in front to leapfrog Telefónica and go top of the leaderboard.

Nicholson’s team got close, leading for long periods over a thrilling final battle on Christmas Day and the next 24 hours after, but in the end Telefónica came through, grabbing the definitive lead with just eight nautical miles to go and eventually winning.

Telefónica held on to finish at 1757:20 UTC on Monday, December 26, just one minute and 57 seconds in front of CAMPER, 15 days after the boats set off from Cape Town, South Africa on December 11.

Telefónica claimed 24 points for first place in the first of a two-stage, 5,430 nautical mile (nm) leg to from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi, where 80 per cent of the available points have been awarded. CAMPER took 20 for second place.

The provisional leaderboard sees Telefónica top with 61 points, followed by CAMPER on 54.

The finish line was set at an undisclosed destination to protect the six-boat fleet from pirate activity. The boats will now be loaded onto a commercial vessel and shipped to a point off the Sharjah coastline in the northern United Arab Emirates in time to start what is sure to be an exciting, day-long sprint to Abu Dhabi in early January for the remaining 20 per cent of the leg points.

PUMA Ocean Racing powered by BERG are currently in third place, followed by Groupama sailing team in fourth and Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing fifth. Team Sanya were forced to suspend racing and head for Madagascar, where they are repairing the rig and focusing on getting in shape for Leg 3 to their home port of Sanya in China.
