Team Sanya make a temporary fix to their D2 rigging after it broke during the night on leg 2 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2011-12, from Cape Town, South Africa to Abu Dhabi, UAE.

EAM SANYA SUFFER DAMAGE TO RIG
Alicante, Spain – Team Sanya suffered damage to part of their rigging early on Monday and are heading to a port in southern Madagascar in order to assess the damage and make a repair plan. No one has been injured and the crew are all safe.
Sanya noticed the damage to one of the stays on the mast during a sail change on Leg 2 from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi and contacted Race Management.
The boat is fully under control with the mast still upright and is still able to sail to shore.
“We were just out of the major breeze and changing sails from the J4 to the fractional zero and were in wind speeds of around 12-14 knots when we noticed a vital piece of rigging loose from the mast (D2)," said skipper and team CEO Mike Sanderson.
"We had been due to tack an hour earlier in the darkness but had delayed that given the conditions and for sure if we had done that, the rig would have fallen over the side. As you can imagine we are totally gutted and can’t quite believe this has happened when everything was going so well.”
While Team Sanya skipper and CEO Mike Sanderson spoke of his disappointment from being out of the running to win the leg, Team Sanya has not formally retired from Leg 2 and can still pick up points from this leg by reaching the safe haven port over the coming weeks.

00:10-01:16 Quote – Mike Sanderson, Skipper, Team Sanya
“It’s all a bit disappointing and sad here on Team Sanya boat. We had just pretty much broken through the low pressure system and we were very excited about the fact that the breeze was going right, which meant that we hoped there was a little secondary low that we could use to propel us east and capitalize on these miles of the mark that we’ve gained. We were going for a sail change and David Rolfe was running a leeward sheet for the new fractional zero and looked up and the D2 – a piece of rigging that comes from the mast to the bottom spreader – was flapping in the wind. Unfortunately that’s the end of our race…”
01:16-01:39 Quote – Mike Sanderson, Skipper, Team Sanya
“What we need to be thankful for is – we were not far off from our tack. It was very… we were just lucky that it happened in daylight. If it had happened in the dark, we wouldn’t have noticed it and we would have tacked and the mast would have fallen down instantly.”
01:39-02:23 Quote – Mike Sanderson, Skipper, Team Sanya
“All in all, incredibly gutted. We now have had to pull out of our second leg. I have never had to pull out of a leg in four Volvo races until the last one and now it’s two in a row. Words can’t explain it, to be honest. Just devastated. Especially when we were in the position we were in. This campaign was all about trying to throw a cat amongst the pigeons. I think 150-mile lead is a pretty big cat amongst some pretty scared pigeons and we were doing what we wanted to do. I’m just shattered that it hasn’t panned out this time.”
