The Girl From The North
This is a story about a girl from the north, her name is Enni Rukajärvi. She is from the village of Rukajärvi situated in Ruka, Lapland. The landscape of this region in the Polar Circle shows its best during Christmas time. Brüttisellen, 15.2.11 Red. (mk) Winter is the longest and darkest season in Finland and the temperature can range anywhere from +5 to -30° degrees. In these harsh weather conditions the nature is incredible and the light is amazing.
In Finland the do not have big mountains, just big and hills with beautiful landscape. This is one of the reasons why they do not have great alpine downhill skiers but make it up with their brilliant freestyle snowboarders!
Early morning is the best time to ride the park. When the flat light hits the hills the park is pretty empty till the light gets dark again. It takes around 5 minutes per run so you get pretty many runs a day!
The light of the day lasts only for a few hours in the middle winter. The perfect way to take out the most of the light is having your own snowmobile which takes you up the hill. It’s -25° degrees outside and Enni is rocking by pulling out some huge airs from the jump.
Enni is a true northern girl. At the moment she loves the atmosphere in the north and doesn’t have any desire to move to a big city. At Ruka there are plenty of places to chill out, relax and get energy before and after some runs on a cold winter’s day.
Enni has been born and raised up in the village of Rukajärvi in Kuusamo which is just 20 minutes away from Ruka ski resort. Her parents are farmers that own cattle. When Enni was younger she was never bored since there was always something to do in the farmhouse.
Enni went to primary school in her home village. Located next to this school, there was a cafeteria, where cross country skiers sometimes stopped for a rest. All the students were working at the cafeteria earning money for the class trips’ ski season passes.
With the beautiful nature just around the corner, the students had the best possible terrain to play. They were proud of their own little hut and fireplace at the school yard.
